5 reasons Why Newborn Photos are important

    Why are Newborn Photos important?

As a London Newborn Photographer, I get asked a lot of questions—
    "What is newborn photography?"
    "Why is it important?"
And the big one: "Is a newborn photoshoot really worth it?"

Honestly, the short answer comes down to one thing: value.

For me, value isn’t just about cost—it’s about meaning. It’s about whether something brings joy, significance, or a feeling you can’t quite put into words. If it does, then it’s valuable. And when something holds value, the price isn’t the thing that defines whether it’s "worth it."

I place value in people, moments, experiences, and emotions. I also place huge value in photographs—because they’re more than just images. They’re a feeling, a memory, a little piece of time that you get to keep. That’s why newborn photography matters so much to me. It’s not just about taking pictures—it’s about capturing the tiniest details of a moment that will never come again.

Light also plays a huge role in how a moment is captured. The way it falls across a newborn’s face, the softness it brings to a family embrace—it all adds depth and emotion to an image. If you’re interested in how I use light to shape the feeling of my photographs, I talk more about it in this post.

That’s also why choosing the right photographer matters. If you’re considering a newborn session, you’ll want to make sure you find someone whose style resonates with you and who makes you feel at ease. I put together a guide on How to Choose the Perfect Newborn Photographer to help with that.

So, if you’re wondering whether newborn photography is important, here are five reasons why I believe it is. Of course, there are plenty more, but these are the first that come to mind.

    1. You will never have this exact moment again

I don’t mince my words, so I’ll say it again for the people in the back: you will never have this moment again.

Time doesn’t stop for anyone. Your baby will only be a newborn for a short while, and before you know it, they’ll have changed completely. In just the first few weeks, newborns begin developing at an incredible pace—gaining strength, becoming more alert, and responding more to the world around them (Mayo Clinic).

If you're unsure whether to book a newborn session, don’t do it just because you feel like you “should.” But if even a small part of you wants to, know this: you won’t regret having these moments captured. When your baby is still tiny, when their fingers are curled into little fists, when they still fit so perfectly in your arms—you’ll have these memories to hold onto forever.

And one day, your child will see these photos too. They’ll look back at them, at just how loved they were right from the start, and that—well, that’s something pretty special.

    2. Take a minute to celebrate

Yes, this is a chance to celebrate a new life—or two, if you’ve welcomed multiples! 🎉

These images aren’t just about capturing what your baby looks like; they’re about marking this moment in your family’s story. And the best part? You can do that no matter how you feel about how you look right now.

As a mum of two, I know what it’s like. I know how easy it is to put yourself at the bottom of the list. But I can tell you this—I’m so grateful I have photos of both my babies, and even more grateful that I made sure to be in them too.

No matter what you think now, when you look back in 5, 10, or even 20 years, you’ll be glad you did this—for your baby, for your family, and for yourself.

    3. Your Children Will Revisit These Photographs for a Lifetime

These newborn portraits will be around forever—if you and your family want them to be. They won’t just sit in an album or on your phone; they’ll be revisited again and again, by you and, more importantly, by your children as they grow.

Imagine them at age 3, 6, 10—flipping through an album, pointing at their tiny hands and feet, asking questions about what they were like as a baby. Then imagine them as teenagers, scrolling through your phone, rediscovering these moments. And as adults, they’ll come back to them again—sharing them with their own children, spouses, maybe even their grandchildren.

In fact, research suggests that family storytelling plays a crucial role in helping children develop a stronger sense of identity and belonging (Psychology Today). Looking at photographs together, reminiscing about the past, and hearing stories about their early years can reinforce their place in the family and build deeper emotional connections.

Honestly, the love, the memories, and the meaning behind these photographs don’t fade—they grow.

And as I write this, I feel a wave of emotion wash over me, because this is exactly why I do what I do. Not just to create beautiful images, but to create something that will hold meaning for generations to come.

    4. you’ll have photographs of you together(AND MORE!)

This one is pretty self-explanatory—but it’s also one of the most important reasons to do a newborn session.

I love capturing those first moments of you together as a new family—whether it’s just the three of you, or a growing family of four, five, or more. These are the images that will remind you not just how tiny your baby once was, but how much love surrounded them from the very start.

And beyond the family portraits, there’s so much more to capture—the way they fit perfectly in your arms, the little yawns, the way their tiny fingers wrap around yours. It’s not just about the posed moments; it’s about the in-between ones too.

    5. If You Choose a Photographer Whose Style Resonates, You’ll Love the Result

In my 13 years as a Newborn and Family Photographer, I’ve found that I tend to connect with families who share a similar appreciation for aesthetics, storytelling, and the beauty in the everyday. We’re drawn to the same kind of images—ones that feel natural, emotive, and timeless.

And honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about what I do. When you choose a photographer whose work speaks to you, you’re not just hiring someone to take pictures—you’re trusting them to tell your story in a way that feels like you.

For me, photography has always been about connection—both with the people I photograph and with the images themselves. That’s why I approach my newborn sessions in a way that feels relaxed, baby-led, and true to life. If you’d like to know more about my approach, I share more in this post.

I’m incredibly thankful that I get to work with families who appreciate this. It allows me to pour my heart into every session—to create something uniquely special for each family while staying true to my artistic vision. It’s this balance that keeps me inspired, always pushing me to capture moments in a way that feels both timeless and personal.

If you’re curious about what drives me creatively and why I photograph the way I do, I share more about that in this post.
